We, the members of the Big Spring Police Department, are committed to the City of Big Spring and its citizens. We exist in order to respond to the law enforcement needs of our citizens working with the community using cooperative dialogue, through crime prevention interdiction, and maintaining an adaptive attitude to provide quality service. On the 20th of May 2015 at approximately 5:30 A.M., the Big Spring Police Department / Howard County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team executed a Big Spring Police Department narcotics search warrant at 1202 E. 3rd (Scottish Inn Motel room 117). The suspect John Manuel Solis Hispanic/Male DOB 11/11/1985 is a convicted felon and was known to carry firearms and have gang affiliations. Upon approaching the room a distraction device was deployed and SWAT began attempting to gain entry into the room at which time shots were fired from within the room towards SWAT members. The door was breached and the initial report indicates gunfire was exchanged between Solis and a SWAT team member who fired only 1 shot. After the SWAT team member fired, while moving into the room, Solis was immediately apprehended. Solis sustained only a minor injury which was the result of the taking of him into custody and not the result of gunfire exchanged. Solis received medical attention on scene by the City of Big Spring EMS. No one else was injured during this incident. Solis has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer a 1st degree Felony offense and is currently being held in the Howard County Detention Center. Additional Charges will be filed at a later date. The investigation has been turned over to the Texas Rangers.
